Warm and cozy…casual, comfort food with a modern day twist!

Located in the heart of Burns Square, Retropolitan bills itself as a “gastropub.”  The term gastropub originated in Britain and was used to distinguish a pub which concentrates on the quality of the food and not just the drink. In that sense, we would agree with Retropolitan’s moniker.  However, it should be noted Retropolitan is more of a restaurant than a traditional pub.

When we first visited Retropolitan, we were struck by the rich, warm and cozy ambience inside and the delightful “under the tree” courtyard seating outside.  Simple, comfortable, and subtly upscale, the décor reflects the menu options; “comfort-food” with upscale culinary twists.  There are many interesting options from which to choose.  So, there should no problem pleasing any palate.  For our meals we chose the following:

Panko Crusted Goat Cheese Salad:  Discs of goat cheese coated with Panko bread crumbs and fried til crisp on the outside and molten on the inside, served on a bed of baby greens with roasted beets, shaved fennel, toasted almonds, and chopped dates. $14
A nice mix of flavors and textures, makes this one of my favorites.
The Retropolitan Burger:  8 ounces of certified angus ground chuck grilled to your liking, topped with lettuce, tomato, and red onion. $9 add cheese for $.50 (Burgers are served with you choice of hand cut french fries, tomato and cucumber salad, or fresh fruit)
Large and juicy, a tad overcooked but delicious nonetheless, I was not disappointed.
Grilled Meatloaf:  A classic meatloaf made of ground prime beef and pork, sliced and finished on the grill for extra flavor $14 (Entrees are served with a choice of 2 sides: vidalia onion rings; watermelon, feta and mint; fried green tomatoes; fresh fruit; house made french fries; tomato and cuke salad; collard greens)
A classic rendition, rich and flavorful, a definite comfort food, just needs the mashed potatoes!

Retropolitan offers an ample selection of interesting beers and wines to accompany your meal.  Nice little extra, home made chips with sour cream for dipping to pair with your aperitif.  The service staff are friendly, attentive, and accommodating.

Casual in style, subtly upscale in décor and culinary options, and reasonably priced, that is Retropolitan, Sarasota’s new gastropub located in Burns Square.
