Caribbean island flavor comes to Southside Village area!
Open for a little more than a year, Big Sugar brings an intriguing flavor to the Sarasota dining scene. With its dark colors, sleek interior décor, large bar area, and open airy space, this Sarasota restaurant projects sophistication rather than just island charm.
The menu is no exception with a wide range of appetizers, salads and entrees from which to choose. Our meal consisted of the following:
Asia de Cuba Spring Rolls: Short Rib/Shrimp sweet plantain/Pistachio Guava spread $10.00
Seafood Paella Family Style: Mussels/Clams/Calamari/Shrimp/Chorizo $20.00
Pescado A La Plancha: Your choice of: fish ( we chose the pan seared grouper,) sauce (we chose the seafood coconut reduction,) and 2 sides (we chose broccolinni and truffle potato mash) $25.00
The food was very well prepared, colorful, artfully presented, and well apportioned. The bread service was tasty and quite unique consisting of a puff like bread roll made with yucca flour and mozzarella cheese, velvety smooth, light, but filling. Another nice touch between courses was the strawberry mojito lollipop compliments of the chef to cleanse the palate. The service was prompt and attentive.
If you find yourself seeking something different from the usual Sarasota dining experience, or perhaps just interested in drinks and some tasty appetizers, then Big Sugar should be at the top of your list.

Insider Tips Big Sugar offers a happy hour weekdays from 4:00 to 7:00. The mojitos, $5.00, are icy cold, flavor filled, fresh, made with real fruit juice, crushed mint, and sugar cane. The best we ever tasted! |
