5 One 6 Burns markets itself as Sophisticated. Southern. Soul. We were not sure what to expect from that tagline, but based upon our experience, let us share our thoughts.
Sophisticated? Yes…Southern? Hospitality…Soul? Without a doubt!
Located in the charming historic area of Burns Court, 5 One 6 Burns occupies a circa 1926 bungalow complete with outdoor dining options and a magnificent old Banyan tree which sets the stage for relaxed sophisticated dining, in a charmed southern styled setting. The combination of white linen, white tables, white lattice and subtle outdoor lighting create a setting reminiscent of the Caribbean or Key West; an interesting juxtaposition for downtown dining!
Since we dined at the restaurant a number of times in the past, we were interested in the recent changes and the menu being offered by the new executive chef, Jerry Marano.
Upon our arrival, the omnipresent friendliness of the staff was immediately apparent as we decided where to dine. We chose an outdoor table.
The menu at 5 One 6 Burns offers an Asian influenced assortment of dishes, chicken, barbeque, certainly something for everybody; however there is an emphasis on seafood. And why not, given our locale and the island ambience?
Our meals comprised the following:
Caesar Salad: Classic hearts of romaine, blackened croutons, and grated parmesan $7.00; we found the portion to be small
The 5 One 6 Salad: Mixed greens, shaved fennel, blueberries, pears, spiced pistachio, melon basil vinaigrette $8.00
Pan Seared Mahi Mahi: Roasted fingerling potatoes, sauté spinach, traditional pico de gallo $22.00
BBQ Red Snapper Tahi Style: marinated and grilled, thai bbq sauce, bok choy, soba noodles $27.00
Duck Special: Grilled duck breast served with grilled scallions, charred red onions, roasted potatoes, and a red pepper jam sauce $28.00
We found the food to be well prepared, artistically presented and well apportioned. However we did find the bread offering to be limited with the quality not on par with the food being served. Good selections of wines are available. We chose a Malbec to accompany our meal and were disappointed to learn the stock was sold out. However another Malbec was offered in it’s place and we were very satisfied.
If you would like to feel as if you escaped to the islands for a special meal, but still enjoy all of the fun things in downtown (movies, galleries, music, sidewalk strolls etc,) try 5 One 6 Burns. You will not be disappointed.
| Insider Tips 5 One 6 Burns offers an “Early Bird” Prix Fixe of 3 courses for $19.95. Offered everyday except Saturdays and Holidays from 5:00pm-5:45pm. An excellent option before or after a movie at The Burns Court Cinema. |
