Everyone needs a very casual dining spot to unwind and relax…the Flying Dog Café might just fit the bill.
A confluence of location (near the SRQ airport) and building (commercial warehouse) serve as a backdrop to this easy going gathering spot on Tallevast Road. A simple flying motif with a bar, casual tables, chairs, and an open spaced, high ceilinged room; one can imagine sitting in an airport hanger. It is easy, relaxed, different, and cool.
The menu is straight forward offering soups, salads, basic sandwiches, specialty sandwiches, panini’s, and a few vegetarian options. All the items are fresh and made to order. Although the Flying Dog Café is open for lunch and dinner, the menu is primarily lunch oriented. For our meals we chose the following:
Crock of Soup: Changes daily, Chili $5.50
Great for a cold air conditioned day! Spicy but not too hot, very flavorful.
Basic Sandwich/Wrap: Includes lettuce, tomato, choice of American cheese, provolone or Swiss, on choice of bread. Served with one side and a pickle upon request. Chicken Salad: All white meat, $7.25A simple chicken salad, just chicken and not much mayo. Fresh fruit was sweet and delicious.
Specialty Sandwiches: Includes a choice of side and pickle upon request.Flying Dog: Ham, cappy, Genoa salami, prosciutto, provolone, lettuce, tomato, olive oil and black pepper. $7.95. (Baked potato salad for the side.)
A nicely prepared sandwich on fresh whole wheat bread. Simple presentation.
The Flying Dog Café offers a selection of soft drinks, beer on tap and in bottles, and wine. All of the wait staff was friendly, attentive, and efficient. Since all of the items are made to order, there may be a small wait for the food but we did not experience anything out of the ordinary.
Not your typical lunch or dinner place, The Flying Dog Café is just the spot for a casual bite to eat and a place where you can meet friends and unwind.
