Add-on recommending is nothing new for this sub, but it’s always the same popular, well known ones over and over again. Nothing wrong with that but…
I thought it would be fun and a good idea to showoff and share some of the more underappreciated add-ons.
So do you have any Hidden Gems you’d like to share?
I got two, one is criminally underrated with only “77 Users” and since finding out about it I now consider it essential for me.
Reddit (Au) Comment Highlights - Free reddit gold basically, if you don’t pay for reddit gold, you don’t get comment highlighting of the new posts since last visit, but with this add-on you can, it makes following old posts MUCH easier, and just like with “Reddit Enhancement Suite” which enhances reddit as a whole, this one does too, and they work well together. I don’t know if I could ever go back to he old way of reddit without this one. So damn underrated with 77 users, ugh.
The only other add-on that fits the bill here with “8049 Users” which is probably a bit to high to be considered a “Hidden Gem” but it’s the second lowest one I got… Is…
Skip Redirect - Nothing fancy here, not even much to talk about really, I’ve tried a lot of “Redirecting” add-ons, but this one from my experiences has been the best, covers all types of links that other add-ons miss, and doesn’t have any of the bloat and overhead some of the other “Redirecting” add-ons have. I just can’t fault this add-on, it does what it sets out to do and does it well, and even though its got 8000 users, that’s still pretty low and deserves a shout-out.
This is imo the best reddit addon Reddit Comment Collapser – Get this Extension for 🦊 Firefox (en-GB)
So much so that I don’t understand how it’s not already common practice in any thread-based page.

It doesn’t help that the AMO search engine is fucking awful and just spits out popular results. Try searching for tab sweeper
(2 users) and the top result is “New Tab Override” while the extension with matching name is positioned near the bottom of the page. If you want relevant results you have to use Google and search with site:addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/
.
- Feedbro: for managing your RSS feeds. It doesn’t require an account, it’s respectful of privacy (or so I’ve heard), and you can upload your RSS subscriptions
- OS style minimize / maximize / close window button: for Linux users. Nightly has an option to hide the title bar but it doesn’t work on all distributions. You can ask Kde (or other) to hide it, but then it also hides those buttons. Maybe there are other extensions like this one, but with a Windows or Linux appearance.
- Redirector: automatic redirection to defined urls. I use it to switch from mobile to desktop versions of some websites.
- Swift Selection Search: it replaced Context Search and Drag & Drop Zones on my Firefox. You can import search engines in a semi-automatic way, by uploading a file from your Firefox directory and set up custom names, urls and even icons. Then you highlight what you want to search, and you can search through a bubble or an entry in the context menu.
- Tusk - Modern KeePass for the browser: manages the passwords stored in a Keepass file. It has an autofill option and allows you to choose how long it has access to the file.
Also, I haven’t really tried Classical Music Only (to browse and discover classical music on Youtube) but it looks promising.
Reload in Address Bar
Moves the reload button inside the address bar, a la Firefox 57 or Chrome. (~5,700 users)
Textarea Cache
The only replacement I found for Lazarus Form Recovery on Firefox. This way, if you close a tab accidentally, you can still save all the text that was inside a text box like a forum post, reddit post, a ticket, etc. (~3,300 users)
