Instructions for setting up WiteGuard on GL-A1300 (Slate) travel router

I’m very new to travel routers. I’m using the free ProtonVPN service and have set it up on my router and it seems to be working. As in, when I check what’s my ip address, I get the Netherlands both on my laptop and my phone (which is connected to my travel router). Although if I check my ip on Safari it gives my actual physical location in the United States.

My main question for this post is how do I configure/install WireGuard on my GL.iNET GL-A1300 (Slate) travel router?

Again, I’m on the free version of ProtonVPN and so far I’ve downloaded the .conf WireGuard file. However, I’m not sure what to do next. I’ve searched quite a bit for step by step instructions to no avail.

Do I go to WireGuard Client or WireGuard Server? And then what…

Also, do I use WireGuard and the VPN at the same time?

Although if I check my ip on Safari it gives my actual physical location in the United States.

That could be due to the private relay in Safari. Try disabling that.

Afterwards, https://ip.me should show the Proton VPN ip correctly.

For the GL-iNET router that is relatively easy. All you have todo is add the wireguard config file to the router and then connect the VPN:

Client. Then see above

Also, do I use WireGuard and the VPN at the same time?

Not needed to run it double, I’d go for either/or
