Hi! I recently moved to Korea from the U.K. and want to get back into XIV (and finally finish Endwalker) should I renew my sub on my U.K. card and move to a Japanese server or play on a Korean server with a Korean card?
I can’t read Korean particularly well. Also does anyone have any server recommendations? Thanks! x
Both Korean and Chinese servers are totally separated from the rest of the world. Those version are being published by a different company on each of those countries and are also one or two patches behind the rest of the world. Monetization also works different in them.
You’ll need a VPN in order to use your already existing Service Account
As an American here in South Korea, I am playing on Crystal (with frequent hops to Aether for high-end content) with almost no issues. I was surprised by how minimal the impact of my ping has on gameplay.
I would be willing to bet that you’ll be fine to play on your UK account!
I would not recommend playing the Korean version of the game as it’s separate from the global version and lags behind in patches/updates.
If you’re worried about your ping being bad or finding players at times that mesh well with you, a Japanese server is a good option.
If you like your European server, there’s always the option of just staying put. Plenty of people play on data centers differing from their region and the ping isn’t TOO bad.
For China I understand, but South Korea? Why!? And it’s also pretty inconvenient that they haven’t designed a way to keep your stuff, in case you move to the country.
Do note. IT CAN get you banned if they figure out youre playing in korea without korean version. Atleast south korea. Wether they will is the question but apparently they did so in the past. Something about korean rules and korea requiring ID for gaming
South Korea has different laws about online gaming, you need to link your account to your government ID so they can ensure you follow those laws. For example kids under 16 used to be restricted from playing video games between midnight and 6am (that law was repealed in 2021). Things like that, along with a vastly different culture around monetization and internet cafes, means it’s easier for many companies just to hand their game off to a different company to manage it in South Korea.
pretty obvious this is a legal issue. neither China nor South Korea are run by SE. everything from account management to servers are isolated and handle locally
they don’t even have the same content cadence (I think Korea got endwalker last year)
it’s also pretty inconvenient that they haven’t designed a way to keep your stuff, in case you move to the country
because they can’t? why would Actoz Soft (KR publisher) give you a license for their game for free when they got no money from your purchase? again, the kr version is being published by a different company, uses a different way of monetization, and it’s behind our version (currently on Patch 6.4 it seems). Everything is 100% incompatible
The way ffxiv is monetized¹ seems to be generally well regarded, so my gut feeling is that the Korean version is a bit more into methods the community here would dislike?
¹ a bit clunky, but not pay to win, not microtransactions, no gacha, only game, subscription, story skips and glam stuff
