Best settings for my Older Netgear router for security from local/wan connection

I currently and temporarily have a Netgear AC1200 dual band router that is ethernet tethered to a Frontier Fios Dual band modem/router.

I need to set up my netgear wifi in a way that I can still use this network for ipcameras that i view remotely. While denying all access from local connection.

Here are the issues…

  1. They may be using something to disguise their device as my mac or ip address.
  2. They may be accessing the router settings and uploading different settings, temporarily.
  3. Internet access in general is kinda spotty. Not the best network coverage, even on the Frontier router.
  4. I would like a way to turn off access or even tweak settings, look stuff up while I am remote, I know that makes my network more vulnerable, so is there a way to add remote access to one of my devices but in a way that is 100% defended from any wan connections?
  5. Sometimes my cameras shut off after a period of time, I am not sure if he is mirroring his device to my ipcameras on my andriod phones/tablets or what…

Help?

Not sure who “he” and “they” are but you are best off using a VPN for remote access and VLANs on your local network to prevent your IP cameras from accessing other local devices.

Your Netgear might have support for VPN Server but highly unlikely to support VLANs. And all bets are off if your intruder has physical access to your local network.

They will most likely have access to my local network… I currently have them on a guest network and they still mess with my ipcam devices. If they are mirroring my screen or using a unicast device then they will always have access to WAN.

In dummy terms, are you saying that I should add a VPN profile to my netgear router then use that to open a remote connection to a device that is also on a VPN profile?

Just trying to clarify. I am not the best at reading comprehension but I can be tech savy sometimes.
