Greek Comfort Food and Real Value!
If one were to judge a restaurant by its décor, the verdict on El Greco Café would be “nothing special.” However this décor may just be part of the allure. Serving Greek food in Sarasota since 1969, the focus at El Greco is on value…extensive menu, good food, large portions, and reasonably priced.
We started our meal with the Famous Greek salad $6.95. The portion was large, the ingredients fresh, the lettuce crisp and slightly chilled, garnished with tomatoes, cucumbers, pepperoncinis, olives, beets, green peppers, onions, and of course Feta cheese. For our main course we had the following:
El Greco Platter (really an appetizer)Chicken souvlaki skewers, spanakopita, stuffed olives, tzadziki, garnished with tomatoes, cucumber, beets and grilled pita. $9.95
Chicken Phyllo Wrap
Chicken breast, leeks, green onions, kasseri and feta cheese, sautéed together; then baked in a crisp phyllo wrap. $13.95
Although the wine list is not extensive, there is a reasonable selection of Greek Red and White wines to choose. The restaurant also serves beer by the bottle.
One point quite noticeable to me was the take out business. In the course of an hour, I observed four people come in to pick up their orders. Perhaps this take out following speaks to the point of décor and the value.
